Who We Are: Glow NI
GLOW (Giving Life Opportunities to Women) is a registered charity that currently operates in Belfast and focuses on the empowerment of women aged 18+ and girls as young as 10 years old.
Established in 2011, and spearheaded by Chara Clarke, GLOW was developed from a common desire of women in the local community to address issues facing their peers such as low self-esteem and confidence, mental health problems, isolation, and general lack of purpose.
As an inter-generational, cross-community organisation, GLOW aims to break the vicious cycle of these issues by equipping women and girls with tools and techniques in order to build confidence, self-esteem, resilience, and essential life skills. This will then help them set positive, realistic steps in achieving goals and will enable a happy lifestyle of positive mental health and fulfilment.
The core GLOW programmes have five outcomes for participants:
- Increased confidence and self-esteem
- Discovery of purpose and identity
- Learn and nurture practical and essential life skills
- Guide you to living a lifestyle of positive mental health
- Build positive and lasting friendships
In addition to the programmes, GLOW also facilitate a Friday morning womens’ drop-in as well as evening youth sessions for girls. These sessions provide a safe outlet for women and girls to develop the connections and friendships made from participating in the programmes.
In January 2019, GLOW received funding from The National Lottery that would enable them to establish You GLOW Girl, a social enterprise which would generate further funding to be invested back into the charity and the mental health programmes being delivered to women and young girls.
